Short Film Evaluation

Our task for this unit was to create a 90 second short film based on any subject we wished. Ours was named 'The Investigation' and was a story about an unsolved crime case and the clues linking to it. An officer discovers the identity but is warned not to announce them due to bad publicity, ending in the criminal not being caught and causing more deaths.

Camera Work:
Overall, I was happy with the camera work .We had shots that were framed nicely and had good connotations behind them, For example these shots:

High angle at 0:17
High angle at 0:06

This first shot is taken during the scene where the officers are clueless as to who is committing the crimes, the high angle is 'looking down' upon them, making them seem weaker. this connotes that the officers are weaker due to their current situation.

The second shows the high angle over a dead body, once again implying that they are weaker. Which in this case is more obvious as to why, since he has clearly been attacked.

Match On action at 0:51 and 0:53

There is a clear match on action between these two shots. The officer reaches for the phone from one angle then another, but they flow almost seamlessly together despite it being taken in two separate shots.

One section that could be improved greatly is the zoom at 0:45, as it is incredibly shaky compared to the other transitions and shots.

Mise En Scene:
During planning, we intended to have matching police uniforms for the officers but time and budget wouldn't allow it, so we went for a more subtle detective style of costume. Using long coats and muted which worked just as well.

The office, though not the location we'd originally planned, fit really well for the scenes we'd story boarded. There were items that wouldn't work in a police office so by altering locations of objects, camera angles and adding items such as the clues it looked more authentic.

An issue was the posters in the background as they were mainly film covers that seemed out of place in a Precinct but, as we were filming on College property, there was no way we'd be able to remove or cover them.

Setting at 0:28

Editing:

In the storyboard we had decided to have the photographs at the end all be on one scene, where they would be 'thrown' at the screen. But sadly we didn't have the time to edit this, as it would have taken a long time to make it look professional.

An edit that went well was the fade between the character looking at the board and the close up of his face. The scenes dissolve and make it look like there's a lot of time passing as he's stood there:

Dissolve at 0:34
A continuity error I noticed is the position of the necklace changing between shots, this is a minor mistake that was caused due to filming on different days (The props couldn't be left in the location)

The necklace changes positions at 0:19 and 0:28

I also wish that we could have spent more time creating the Title and credits, as they were hastily made at the end of editing so don't look as good or last as long as they should do

Sound:
Overall I'm very pleased with the sound, the music is a Copyright free Kevin Mcleod piece (The Chamber) that was uploaded onto YouTube. It went through several of his works before deciding on this one, it has the right amount of mystery behind it but isn't so overpowering that it takes the importance away from the scenes.

We deleted the sound from the opening scenes as there was lots of background noise from the traffic and wind, which I was worried would sound irregular but, as there was no dialogue, there is no difference.

My one issue with sound is that during one of the final scenes the video cuts off the last part of the characters line. This as due to issues with the original shot, if we'd kept the full footage there would be extra unwanted background noise that there was no way to get rid of or re-film.

The line cuts off at 1:01

Overall, I am happy with how it's turned out as it fully follows the storyboard and, despite a few errors in filming, looks good. If we had more time and were able to go back and film particular scenes again it would have resolved any of the issues mentioned.
